Vancouver’s Top EV Charging Contractor Completed This Major Project Ahead of Its Timeline
As experienced EV charging experts, TCA Electric is often called on for large-scale charging and infrastructure projects. We have both the experience and planning know-how to evaluate electrical needs, map out EV charging stations, and ensure even the largest commercial and multifamily EV charging projects are completed on time and within budget.
For today’s Project Spotlight, we’re sharing the perfect example of our logistical planning and installation aptitude when it comes to large-scale projects. Our client, a strata located in New Westminster, needed full-scale EV charging infrastructure planned and installed with a tight timeline. The TCA team was able to complete the project well within their timeline and save this strata thousands of dollars in the process. See how in today’s post!
Background & Client: A New Westminster Strata
In this project, we worked with the president of a strata organization located in New Westminster. The president had originally found TCA Electric after searching online for a contractor to complete an EV Ready Plan, as they were looking to add electric vehicle charging capabilities to their complex.
The Challenges: Forming a Second Opinion
After initially getting in contact with us, the strata turned to an engineering firm to complete the EV Ready Plan before working with us to complete needed upgrades. This was because the City of Westminster was its own utility provider, not BC Hydro, and there wasn’t access to the past 12 months of power consumption. However, the engineering firm’s plan suggested upgrading the electrical service to the complex—which would incur an additional $80,000 of expenses.
Upon seeing this, our team proposed monitoring the building’s power consumption during the winter months to get a more accurate assessment of power demands. These two months of monitoring revealed that the building already had the capacity for EV upgrades. Without the full 12 months of power consumption data, we worked with our associates at VT Engineering Inc to confirm the calculations, which ultimately saved our client a substantial amount of money.
The Project: Electrical Infrastructure Upgrades
Our client’s goal was to make this large building fully ready for EV charging capabilities that would serve them well into the future. Ultimately, this meant providing electrical infrastructure to support 115 EV ready stalls.
The client had a relatively tight timeline, as they wanted to have work completed by September of 2024. This would be logistically difficult, but thanks to our close and longstanding relationships with our vendors, it was far from impossible.
The Results: Ready for EV Charging
TCA pulled the necessary permitting from Technical Safety BC and got right to work on this project. While the timeline to acquire the needed distribution switches to power the EV chargers was very tight, we were able to get what we needed on time from our incredible vendors.
This was a full-team effort on our part at TCA Electric, with John serving as project manager for the EV infrastructure, Josh acting as site foreman, and Paneet and Karen completing this amazing dream team. Ultimately, we were able to finish work well ahead of our September deadline, completing the project by mid-July.
