We’re Sharing More About Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology
The electric vehicle revolution is upon us—but along with the clear benefits of cleaner transportation, there are some side effects to be considered. For example, the manufacturing of EVs requires lithium to create the batteries, and this increase in demand has led to concerns.
Similarly, the increase in EVs has led to higher demands for electrical power, and that’s where “V2G” comes in. But what is V2G (that is, vehicle-to-grid) technology, and how can it help the power grid?
At TCA Electric, we’ve been Vancouver’s EV charging experts for years, leading the electric vehicle charge since the early stages. As electrical experts, we of course know that so many new devices drawing power from the electrical grid present a unique challenge. Here’s more about what vehicle-to-grid technology does and how V2G can help overcome this new challenge.
What Is Vehicle-to-Grid Technology, or V2G?
Vehicle-to-grid technology refers to a technological advance in EV charging that enables electric vehicles not just to charge, but to feed power from their batteries back into the electrical grid. Another term for this is “bidirectional charging,” as the chargers that enable V2G technology can both provide power and accept power back.
While it may sound simple on the surface—after all, if power can be sent one way, why can’t it be sent the other?—V2G technology is actually fairly complex. It requires smart technologies across the board, as the charging station must be able to communicate with the power grid and the electric vehicle plugged into it.
Why Does V2G Matter?
While the increase in electric vehicle ownership is good overall it does present certain problems that need to be solved. One of the more straightforward results of more EVs on the road is simply a higher demand for electricity. All of those electric vehicles need to charge somewhere, and chargers are hooked up to the central power grid, which creates more demand for electricity.
Perhaps more importantly, the addition of electric vehicles can create a larger swing in demand on the power grid depending on the time of day. If more EVs are charging during business hours, when power demands are already higher, this could overload the entire system.
Much like how your utility provider can vary pricing depending on your usage at peak and off-peak times, however, V2G charging could enable utility companies to alleviate some of the demand on the power grid. With vehicle-to-grid technology, EVs can actually help to support the power grid during peak times, then draw power once more at off-peak hours.
Other Benefits of V2G Technology
More than simply helping with power demands, vehicle-to-grid technology has some additional benefits that range from minor conveniences to things that almost sound like science fiction.
As a practical benefit, for instance, V2G can help reduce the volatility of utility costs. Those who must use power during peak times won’t have to worry as much about extra charges as these vehicles help support the supply of energy.
Perhaps a more interesting benefit: as more V2G-capable chargers hit the market, EV owners may be able to provide battery backup for their homes using their electric vehicles. This is already possible for those with Wallbox EV chargers.
Lastly, and more sci-fi: EVs can serve as expanded storage for renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. One of the primary disadvantages of solar and wind is their intermittence, as the grid must store power for times when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. However, EVs provide a fascinating opportunity by effectively expanding those storage capabilities.
