TCA Electric Installed 70 EV Charging Stations in This Multifamily Complex
Installing EV charging networks for multifamily properties requires a skilled professional electrical contractor with a high degree of planning capabilities. These systems must be integrated within complex electrical systems, installed to meet current needs, and designed for expandability to future-proof as more drivers turn to electric vehicles.
At TCA Electric, our team is highly adept at handling complex multifamily EV charging projects. In today’s Project Spotlight, we’re taking a look at an excellent example: a project where our team planned out 70 EV-ready parking stalls for a large multifamily complex. This project took a high degree of planning and contributions from many of our team members. Not only that, but we were able to ensure our client maximized their savings by utilizing BC Hydro rebates.
Let’s take a look at this project.
Background & Client: Mountain Terrace
For this project, we worked with Mountain Terrace, a strata-run multifamily building in North Vancouver. We had previously worked with one of the apartment owners, completing renovation work on an earlier project. The strata wanted to prepare the building for EV charging capabilities and were hoping to work with a North Vancouver electrician, ultimately reaching out to us.
The Project: Full-Scale Multifamily EV Charging Network
The goal of the strata was to plan and install a full-scale EV charging network to serve their multifamily building. While the demand for EV chargers was not currently high, they saw this as an opportunity to future-proof their building in order to best serve their tenants both now and years down the road.
However, they also knew that preparing their building for a larger EV charging network would require careful planning and coordination. They also had cost concerns and wanted to ensure these were taken into account throughout the project.
At TCA Electric, our goal is always to provide the most effective solutions for our clients, which includes guiding them through the process of applying for and acquiring rebates for their EV projects.
Navigating the Rebate Process
EV rebates have been robust for years here in British Columbia. In particular, BC Hydro has aimed to support multifamily buildings in providing their tenants with readily available EV charging solutions.
That said, funding is limited, and in some cases may run out. We coordinated with our clients throughout this project to ensure they would be able to maximize their savings and make their EV project as cost-effective as possible.
Because this was a long-term project, the BC Hydro rebates came and went as we planned out their new EV charging network. However, our team stayed on top of the rebate information and ensured we had everything ready to submit an application once the rebates returned.
Sure enough, the province provided further funding for multifamily EV charging rebates. In the end with our EV Ready Plan submission, we were able to help get Mountain Terrace approved for a total of $59,000.
Completing the Installation
This project involved two main stages: creating the EV Ready Plan and executing on it to ready this building for further EV charging demands.
In the course of completing this project, we determined we would need an electrical engineer to complete certain elements of the permit application. We partnered with VT Engineering for this, a consulting company here in Vancouver who we’ve collaborated with several times over the years.
Our team then set about getting this complex EV ready. Project manager Warren Ferino worked with the client to get approved for rebates, all while educating them on their available options, the types of EV chargers, and the pros and cons of each.
John Urrea, on the other hand, was in charge of the electrical installation itself. With Josh as foreman and Paneet and Karen as supporting electricians, this really involved the whole TCA Electric team!
Ultimately, our team expertly navigated this project, preparing 70 parking stalls to meet this building’s growing EV charging demands.
